By Week 12, you may start noticing physical changes — slight weight gain, a thicker waistline, and perhaps the beginning of a small bump, depending on your body shape and fitness level.
If this is your first pregnancy, you probably don’t need maternity clothes just yet. But it’s a good idea to start shopping around for looser, more comfortable clothing. Soft, flowy blouses and wide-leg pants are great choices at this stage. You may also want to start setting aside pieces that won’t fit in the months to come.
One new symptom that might show up this week is heartburn — a burning sensation in your chest or throat. It’s caused by the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the valve between your stomach and esophagus, allowing acid to creep upward. This can come and go, and may last through your pregnancy — but it’s nothing to worry about.
Also, expect to notice more vaginal discharge than usual. As long as it’s milky white and odourless, it’s totally normal. But if it has any colour or a strange smell, contact your doctor.
Your baby is undergoing big changes too: he now has earlobes, and he’s starting to open and close his tiny fists!
