The first week of breastfeeding can feel overwhelming. Between recovering from birth and learning how to care for your newborn, nursing may not be as “natural” as you imagined. That’s okay.

Here’s what to expect during those first few days—and how to make it easier.

  1. It Might Not Happen Instantly

Breastfeeding is a skill—one you and your baby are both learning. Many moms experience difficulty latching, sore nipples, or low milk flow in the early days. Don’t panic. Your baby’s tummy is tiny and only needs small amounts of colostrum at first.

  1. Your Milk Comes in Around Day 3–5

At first, you produce colostrum—a thick, golden liquid rich in antibodies. Your mature milk usually “comes in” around the third to fifth day. Your breasts may feel fuller, and your baby will begin to feed more actively.

  1. Feed on Demand

Your baby will want to feed frequently—often 8 to 12 times in 24 hours. This helps stimulate your milk supply. Crying is a late hunger cue; look for signs like rooting, sucking motions, or hand-to-mouth gestures.

  1. Get Help Early

If you’re struggling, ask a lactation consultant or midwife for support. Don’t wait until you’re in pain or overwhelmed.

  1. Take Care of You

Stay hydrated, rest when you can, and eat nourishing meals. Breastfeeding burns calories and takes energy—your well-being matters too.

The first week is a learning curve, but it gets easier. Be kind to yourself. You’re doing beautifully, even on the hard days.
