How to Treat Your Child’s Fever: First Aid Tips for Parents
Learn the essential first aid steps every parent should take when their child has a fever. From temperature checks to medication and when to call the doctor.
When your child has a fever, it can be worrying. But with the right steps and a calm mind, you can ease their discomfort and keep them safe until you see a doctor. Here’s what to do first:
1. Call the Pediatrician
Always arrange the earliest appointment possible. It’s important to understand the reason behind your child’s fever—your pediatrician may prescribe antibiotics or other treatments depending on the cause.
2. Check the Temperature
Use a reliable thermometer. Mercury or digital thermometers are the most accurate.
3. If the Temperature Is 38°C (100.4°F) or Lower
Give your child fever-reducing medication such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, if advised by your doctor.
4. If the Temperature Is Higher Than 38°C
Remove most of your child’s clothes. In hot weather, you may even remove all clothing. Use lukewarm water (not cold or icy) to bathe or sponge your child to help reduce body temperature before administering medication.
⚠️ Important: Fever-reducing medications may be less effective with very high temperatures. Cooling the body first can make them work better.
5. Re-Dose as Advised
You can give the same fever medication every 4 to 6 hours. If fever rises again between doses, talk to your pediatrician about alternating with another type of medication.
6. Dress Them Warmly (Again)
Once their temperature returns to normal, gently dress your child again in light clothing.
7. What Not to Do
Never use cold water or alcohol for sponging—it can cause sudden chills. Don’t bundle your child in heavy blankets.
