Week 21 Pregnancy

You’re still in the second trimester where life is still fine and easy, despite a few inconveniences and changes which you can easily cope with. Your baby now is about 11 inches long, about the size of a big carrot and is yet to grow so very fast the coming weeks.

This is a super comfortable phase of your pregnancy that will last for probably the coming 4 or 5 weeks. You don’t feel so heavy yet and you’re certainly done with the nausea and annoying dizziness of the first trimester.

You, however, will experience some evident discomfort in your long night sleep. You long for sleeping on your stomach as well as your back. The first is now an impossibility and the second is not recommended, for your baby now is putting more weight on your uterus and may be putting some pressure on your vena cava, a large and important vessel that delivers deoxygenated blood from the lower and middle body into the right atrium of the heart, which will hinder an easy flow of blood to your little one lying inside. This could cause him slow development, which you don’t wish to happen.

Some pregnant women, but not all, may develop  varicose veins at this phase. You don’t have to go through the same. But to keep yourself safe, always make sure you don’t stand for a long period of time. Also raise your feet and legs on any comfortable table in front of your chair or sofa, try to exercise daily as much as you can, sleep on your left side, and get a good maternity support hose. Also try to wrap your legs with warm wet towels.

This will so much limit your chances of developing varicose veins.

Continue finalising preparations for your delivery, baby room and your after delivery self. You will relieve yourself of so much unwanted pressure and mess.
